What is Skin Needling with a Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller?

Skin Needling with the Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller results in smoother, firmer and younger looking skin. Visible signs of skin rejuvenation are seen after just six to eight weeks following the procedure and can continue for up to a year.

Thousands of tiny puncture wounds are caused with micro needles; each pinprick begins the onset of the normal healing process and induces growth factors and new collagen and elastin to be laid down on the upper dermal layer of the skin. The procedure produces collagen layers on a scale similar to laser therapies.

By having a number of consecutive Skin Needling sessions, new collagen and elastin are produced progressively until indented scars and deep lines are filled. Skin Needling does not require the removal of healthy epidermis, which means that it offers a rapid healing time and does not cause any comparable pain.

The Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller micro needles are made in the EU and precision-engineered from titanium. Titanium gives the needles a finer and more endurable edge, causing less discomfort and irritation as compared to stainless steel rollers. It will not pit or damage the skin or risk tearing which can cause scarring. Every Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller micro needle is gold plated to maintain sterility.

Different sizes of the Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller are available to treat common issues such as facial rejuvenation, acne scarring and rejuvenation, stretch marks and cellulite.
What is the procedure?

Skin Needling is performed in a safe and precise manner with the single-use sterile Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller. The procedure normally takes between 30 to 45 minutes. Before the procedure, a topical anaesthetic or local block is applied to the skin to ensure a painless and comfortable experience. After your skin has been numbed, the practitioner will gently roll the Dermaroller over your skin to puncture its outermost layers and create tiny pin prick injuries. These microscopic wounds will stimulate new collagen deposition. Although the wounds close within an hour, their effects can be seen for up to a year after the treatment. After the treatment we apply Age Intervention Regeneration Booster, Transformation Cream and an SPF.
What happens afterwards?

During the first 24 to 48 hours following the procedure, the skin may be affected by light to moderate swelling, redness, sensitivity to touch, itchiness and pin prick spots of bruising. These issues, and your expected recovery time, will depend on the depth of needle insertion into the dermis and you will be advised about your predicted post-treatment appearance during your consultation. By Day 3, the treated skin may start to scab slightly and remain pinkish to red in colour. At this stage, the skin may be camouflaged with mineral make-up and normal life can resume. The scabbing and skin redness should be reduced or greatly diminished by Day 4 and, by Day 5, the area will have healed leaving barely any evidence that the procedure has taken place.
What is the after-care procedure?

A topical layer of retinol and hydrating B5 serum must be kept on overnight and washed off the following morning with warm water only. You should avoid the use of cleansers or topical products for at least 36 hours post treatment. After the treatment we apply Age Intervention Regeneration Booster, Transformation Cream and an SPF. These products can be continued as a home regime.

Mineral make-up can be worn after approximately 24 hours post treatment. Your normal skincare regimen can be resumed, as well as AHAs and BHAs used to soften and superficially resurface the skin, once it has completely recovered from the Skin Needling procedure.
What happens between Skin Needling sessions?

We recommend that you use the Personal Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller along with a daily application of topical vitamin C and A as this will accelerate the regenerative processes and consolidate the results of each Skin Needling session.
How many sessions are recommended?

The number of sessions required will depend on the initial skin condition and anticipated procedure result. Skin Needling treatments can be repeated without limit every six to eight weeks and a course of three sessions is usually sufficient. The six to eight week interval between each session allows for maximum new collagen deposition and gives us the opportunity to accurately assess the single treatment results. Collagen formation can continue for up to 12 months after just one treatment.
What are the advantages of Skin Needling over other skin therapies?

Skin Needling creates dermal damage while leaving healthy epidermis intact – this means that there is no skin damage. It also does not result in skin sensitivity to UV light and, unlike with some skin therapies, there is no risk of permanent skin discolouration.

Skin Needling with the Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller is suitable for all skin types and even thin skin. The procedure offers minimal discomfort post-treatment and, because there is a very short healing time, you will only need around 48 hours’ downtime after the session. This is a painless skin therapy which can be managed with topical anaesthetics and there are minimal or no side effects. Skin Needling also offers a cost effective alternative to other skin therapies, such as Fraxel laser treatment.
